A Brief History of Mulled Wine

Mulled wine has a rich history dating back to Roman times. The Romans would heat wine and add spices to preserve it and keep warm during the colder months. As the Roman Empire expanded, so did the practice of spicing wine, spreading across Europe.

By the Middle Ages, mulled wine had taken on its festive identity, with the addition of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves – luxurious spices that were associated with wealth and celebration. In Victorian England, mulled wine became synonymous with Christmas, thanks in part to its mention in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

The Perfect Mulled Wine Recipe

Here’s our tried-and-tested recipe for a classic mulled wine that’s easy to prepare and guaranteed to impress your guests.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of rich, fruity red wine (we recommend Shiraz or Malbec)

  • 2 oranges (one zested and juiced, the other sliced into rounds)

  • 4 tbsp caster sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • 4 cloves

  • 1 star anise

  • 100ml water

Method

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the water, orange juice, sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise. Gently heat until the sugar dissolves, stirring occasionally.

  2. Pour in the wine and add the orange slices. Warm the mixture over low heat for 10-15 minutes, ensuring it doesn’t boil (this preserves the alcohol).

  3. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed. Strain into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve immediately.

Flavour Adjustments to Make It Your Own

One of the joys of mulled wine is its adaptability. Here are a few ideas to put your unique spin on this festive drink:

  • Apple Twist: Add 150ml of cloudy apple juice to the mixture for a subtle sweetness and depth of flavour. Garnish with thin apple slices.

  • Ginger Spice: Include a few slices of fresh ginger for a warming kick.

  • Cranberry Zing: Toss in a handful of fresh or frozen cranberries and a splash of cranberry juice for a tart, festive flair.

  • Vanilla Dream: Pop in a vanilla pod for a mellow, creamy undertone.

Choosing the Right Wine

The best mulled wine starts with a good base. Opt for a wine that’s rich and fruity with notes of blackberry, cherry, or plum. Shiraz, Malbec, or Merlot are all excellent choices as they complement the spices beautifully. Avoid wines that are too tannic or dry, as these can overpower the flavours.

Serving Suggestions

For a professional finish, garnish your mulled wine with a slice of orange, a cinnamon stick, or a star anise. Serve it in heatproof glasses to showcase its beautiful ruby hue. If you're feeling adventurous, add a splash of brandy or port for an extra festive kick.
